Chapter 45

Inside Lake Zarillo Starkiller, Wahrner’s Grise

“Hopper?”

Sun’s slurred word was her first since reviving from the sedation in the cold room inside the starkiller base where the Lumar had obediently deposited all eight boxes.

The place was empty, and that was just as well, because the hardened CASPer drivers currently looked as weak as drunken kittens.

It was taking all their energy to emerge from their body bags and peel off the breathing apparatus and IV feeds.

Maybe it would pass. As a boy, Branco remembered watching a dragonfly emerge from its pupa. The insect had looked exhausted by its rebirth. But within fifteen minutes it had launched from its leafy branch and caught its first prey on the wing, claiming its position as the apex predator in the air above the pond.

He’d been Preben then, of course. How quickly the old memories had become familiar.

He shook his head. That was for another time.

“Be careful underfoot,” he warned the CASPer team, pointing at the floor, which was slippery with the concealment slime that had packed the inner compartments.

Sun had eyes only for the white-backed Jeha.

“What’s she doing here already?” she demanded.

“I tried to sabotage the weapon as soon as I could,” said the Jeha. “They shot at me. Please don’t hurt me.”

“Branco?” Sun queried.

“Timetable’s messed up,” he replied. “But Hopper’s with us. Zarbi says she’s already explained how to perform the data extraction more efficiently.”

Sun waved him quiet. “Need a few minutes. I just want you to tell me one thing, Branco. Do we know where to go and what to blow up?”

“Yes, Major.”

“And Sneetal?”

“Already back with the truck.”

She nodded and tossed him her Ctech GP-90 pistol and a spare mag. “Guard the door.” She rose unsteadily to her feet and raised her voice. “People, we’ve got five minutes to bemoan our post-resuscitation hangover. Then I want those CASPers unpacked and active. Let’s do the job we came for.”
